STEaM (Art/Multimedia 10th Grade
2013/14 Syllabus
“I never made one of my discoveries through the process of rational thinking”
― Albert Einstein
Instructor: Eusebio “Travis” Sevilla
Email: [email protected]
Phone: 760-759-2733
Location: Room 124 STEaM Room
Goals of the Course:
To develop a thoughtful, and critically engaged citizen of the world, and make some cool stuff along the way. This course strives to combine traditional methodologies of art (drawing, painting, etc) with historical and contemporary models of visual culture and design thinking. In addition to incorporating real world design studio practices and techniques. And of course, to have fun while achieving our goals.
Essential Aspects:
Through the process of design thinking principles that incorporate the visual, aural, sculptural, and performative aspects of art making, design, and production, this class will address a host of issues in our culture today, as well as specifically within an art context. Through diverse projects using diverse subject matter, the students will develop a fundamental understanding of how to communicate visually, and to prepare a professional presentations of their work. The class content will often overlap with the student’s core curricula, and as such, we will strive to incorporate all of the core curricula disciplines in some capacity as often as possible.
Powerschool and Edmodo
IMPORTANT PLEASE READ
Powerschool is the permanent and final place where grades can be accessed and recorded. However, for the majority of our coursework we will be using edmodo to track projects, grades, assignments, calendars, etc. Each student should log onto www.edmodo.com and sign up as a “Student”. Each parent/s should also sign up on www.edmodo.com as a parent. During the first week of school students will receive a group code to add my class. Once all students are added I will distribute parent access codes as well. Please familiarize yourself with edmodo if you have the chance.

I also wanted to share what I think is some great “Rules” for success from the artists John Cage and Merce Cunningham
Rule#1 Find a place you trust, and try trusting it for awhile
Rule#2 (General Duties for a Student)
Pull EVERYTHING out of your teacher
Pull EVERYTHING out of your fellow students
Rule#3 (General Duties as a Teacher)
Pull EVERYTHING out of your students
Rule#4 Consider everything an EXPERIMENT
Rule#5 Be SELF DISCIPLINED.
This means finding someone wise or smart and choosing to follow them. To be disciplined is to follow in a better way.
Rule#6 Follow the leader and be a leader. NOTHING IS A MISTAKE. There is no WIN and no FAIL. There is only MAKE!
Rule#7 The only rule is WORK. If you work it will lead to something. it is the people who do all the work all the time who eventually catch onto things. You can fool the fans, but not the players.
Rule#8 Don’t try and CREATE and Analyze at the same time. They are different processes
Rule#9 Be happy whenever you can manage it. Enjoy yourself. It is lighter than you think.
Rule#10 We are breaking all the rules, even our own rules and how do we do that? By leaving plenty of room for “X” qualities
Helpful Hints:
Always Be Around
Come or Go to Everything
Always go to class
Read everything you can get your hands on.
Look at movies carefully and often
SAVE EVERYTHING. It may come in handy later
Classroom Management/Expectations:
It is truly important that we remember the Golden Rule when in an art class. Individual and group critique is a large portion of being an artist and an integral way in which to advance our artwork. Critiques can put people on vulnerable states of mind and as such we want to address this.
“Tough on content, Soft on people” Remember we are here to add constructive criticism and thoughts in order to help one another. Not to be mean.
Participation:
This means “COME TO CLASS” being in class and working, participating in discussions, coming prepared to work (ie, proper footwear, clothing, supplies, etc.), having readings done, etc. These are all integral to a successful arts program. Besides art class is the most stupendous and totally awesome class you will have right?
Motivation:
“TRY HARD” and “WORK HARD”. I am way more interested in your growth and ability to think critically about your world than your ultimate ability to “draw” like the person next to you. Put in the time and you will get better at all of the skills, but it is your ideas and passion that I am most tuned into to. And remember, there is always something to do in art!
Clean up!
This should go without saying, but we have limited space and limited time to work. A clean well organized studio helps everyone be more productive. So no leaving messes, and make sure all of your supplies are put away and your work area/s are clean and swept before you leave.
Grading:
Each student will be responsible for coming to class daily and working their hardest to get the most out of their art classes and teacher. Additionally each student will need to complete their course projects.
In order to stimulate an environment wherein students are working towards these goals in a self-motivated fashion there will not be traditional grades given. Students will receive weekly participation points for the duration of the course. Projects will receive feedback throughout the process and students will have the opportunity to continue to rework their projects until they are satisfied that the work they produced is “the best they can produce”.
At the quarter, and end of semester each student will propose in writing the “grade” they deserve based on a combination of the weekly participation check ins, and the work they turn in for projects and exhibitions etc.
If you have any questions regarding my grading policy please feel free to contact me via email or phone.
Deeper Learning Opportunities:
For the student/s looking for more challenges, additional project aspects may be assigned as well as additional projects and readings as needed.
